Personal Playlist
My favorite singer hands down would have to be Bob Marley. Bob Marley is a Jamaican singer and songwriter from the 1900's. Marley did not start his music career on his own but was actually part of a band that included his close friends. Funny enough the reggae band was called "The Wailers" because they "started off crying" prior to them receiving vocal lessons. My favorite song by Bob Marley would have to be his song "One Love". Which is funny because Bob Marley had his own documentary that came out early this year titled "One Love".
Another song I find really beautiful would have to be "love is my religion" which is actually not sung by Bob Marley, but instead by his son Ziggy Marley.
Another singer I grew up listening to and still love very much would have to be Selena. Her voice is so beautiful and her story, though tragic, helped pave the way for so many female Mexican American Musicians. Selena started off in a family band with her and her brother and sister. The band was created by Selena's father, Abraham, who had a passion for music. The family band was originally titled "Selena Y Los Dios" and they sang Tahano style music. Once Selena signed a deal with a record player, they agreed to shorten the band name to just "Selena", though Selena insisted she still play with her family. My favorite song by Selena would have to be "Como la Flor", which was one of Selena's groundbreaking songs that really sent her career off. Selena was also known for her dances she would do while performing, as you can see in the video as she sings "Como La Flor".
Another cultures music that has always interested me was Hawaiian/ Native Pacific Islander music. Though I don't know much about the meaning for their music I still love to listen to it. The songs that I have heard seem to be very loving words, pared with very upbeat and almost tropical sounds. A song that I've recently been introduced to is "Ehu Girl" By Kolohe Kai.
Another song Pacific Islander song I really enjoy would have to be from the musical Moana, a movie about a Native Pacific Islander Princes who saves her island. The song is titled "Logo Te Pate" sung by Olivia Fo'i, Opetaia Foa'i, and Talaga Steve Sale. I especially like the drums in this song. Though the song I put below is sung by Te Vaka, which actually came out prior to the movie's version.
Hey Kiana, I love your blog. I have always loved Bob Marly, and I also included him in my blog for our playlist. I do really like the song "One love" but I chose "No Women, No Cry" for mine. I watched the documentary called One Love with my mom and we really got hooked on it. I also really like your other choice of songs, and I liked listening to all of them.
ReplyDeleteHey Kiana! I also love Bob Marley and grew up listening to a few of his songs. Have you listened to "Praise Jah In the Moonlight" by his (great?)grandson? It's so good, and one of his songs, "Crisis," is sampled. I also liked your other song choice, "Logo te pate" as well.
ReplyDeleteHey Kiana, I just wanted to say this blog was really great! Right when I opened it my eyes lit up due to seeing the great Bob Marley himself! You also introduced me to a few other songs and artist that I wasn’t aware of! Definitely will be adding them.
ReplyDeleteOf all the songs you shared, I gotta say that Como La Flor is definitely my favorite. I've listened to a few of Selena's songs, but I don't believe I've listened to this one before. Also, it's been a while since I've heard any of Bob Marley's songs, so this was a nice refresher. Thank you for sharing this wonderful music with us!
